Female Athletes & Boots Month - Tennis Week:
Serena Williams
Tennis Week concludes by celebrating two Gold Medals for Serena Williams in the Summer Olympic Games in London, England! Yesterday was a big day for Serena as she defeated Maria Sharapova in the Women's Singles match by a score of 6-0 and 6-1. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are the first time Serena has won the gold medal in the Women's Singles event. However, today was just as special for Serena as she combined with older sister, Venus to beat Andrea
Hlavácková, Lucie
Hradecká of the Czech Republic. It is the third Olympic gold metal Serena and Venus won together in the Women's Doubles event to go along with their victories in Athens, Greece in 2000 and Beijing, China in 2008.
Both Serena and Venus have had tremendous professional tennis careers. Venus won seven grand slam singles titles, including five Wimbledon victories in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2008 and consecutive U.S. Opens in 2000 and 2001. Venus also won 13 doubles titles and a gold medal in the Women's singles in 2000!
Serena is the better player, however. Serena has 14 grand slam titles in Women's singles, 13 grand slam titles in Women's doubles plus her 2012 gold medals to go along with her gold medals in Women's Doubles in 2000 and 2008.
Serena is the ultimate overachiever though. While she has been one of the top female tennis athletes, she has started her own clothing line, called Serena Williams Signature Statement Collection. Recently Serena starred in a promotional advertisement for the video game Top Spin 4. In the video Serena rocks some thigh high boots and teasingly reminds us, "You realize this is a fantasy right?" A fantasy that was deemed too hot for TV, but we have it here and its no fantasy, that really is the gold medal champion, Serena Williams!
